Volunteer Travel Insurance

Lots of people that are travelling long-term, choose to include an element of paid or voluntary work into their itineraries.

Doing volunteering can be a very rewarding thing to do, and can benefit people, animals and the environment in all sorts of useful ways. It can also provide volunteers with work experience, a chance to learn a useful skill and an opportunity to meet new and interesting people in an exotic environment.

One thing that is often overlooked is the need for specialist travel insurance to cover the actual activity or work that you will be doing. Many travellers may unwittingly assume that they will be covered under standard travel insurance, but this could cause a complication if a claim arises. It’s important to make sure that you confirm travel insurance coverage for all of the activities that you will be undertaking and the work that you will be doing, so that you will be covered for your emergency medical expenses, if an unforeseen illness or injury arises either in your work or leisure time.

The voluntary organisation that you’re working for, may have some medical insurance in place, but this may have restrictions, and may not include cover to repatriate you back to the UK, if you have a serious accident.

Voluntary work can often involve working with animals, or using farming machinery, and both of these kinds of work are potentially more risky than, for example, working in an office or restaurant.

With this in mind, we have developed our ‘Working Holiday’ travel insurance policy to cover both paid and voluntary work, to make it easy to get the right cover for your individual plans. To reflect the risks involved in doing different jobs, you choose the Work Pack that includes the work that you will be doing, to then have the peace of mind that your chosen voluntary work will be covered.

Our specialist ‘Working Holiday’ policy also has other useful benefits, as it is very flexible and can be tailored to meet your particular plans. It can be taken out for up to two years away from the UK and you can also add Activity Packs for sports you plan to do, that aren’t covered as standard under Activity Pack 1. As standard, you are allowed up to 2 return journeys back to the UK (of up to 21 days) , but you also have the option of increasing the number of return trips to 4, if that is something you want to take advantage of.

By taking out one of our ‘Working Holiday’ policies, you can then work, rest and play on your trip abroad, with peace of mind, and the backing of a comprehensive travel insurance policy.
